Ideas

My current work is an investigation of the ways in which information, the drawn mark, memory and the natural intersect. I'm interested in how the surrounding repetition of visual information is built to inform our physical experience. Thru the process of mark making and printing images I mimic the layering of information upon the physical and cultural environment. This opens the way for awkward juxtapositions of information and gaps in the production of meaning. In some way this information seems to precede actual moments or experience. The pseudo-biological and industrial objects in my work are stand-ins for a synthesis of the human figure and physical environment.

How are we the recorders of cultural information? Where does production and consumption separate, and how can we re-evaluate our role in the building of knowledge? My work follows this line of questioning, and is meant to act as an visual exploration of these issues.

Process

I am very invested in the act of drawing as a way of investigating and thinking. Most of my work is completed using some traditional printmaking processes combined with drawing, collage and painting. I find that this offers me more opportunities to make decisions as the work progresses, since there is an opportunity to cast aside some matrices or introduce new ones at anytime while not losing my initial image. This also inserts some distance between an initial idea and its final incarnation, so that the visual information I create builds upon itself. I also feel that this is a very open way of working, and the process of building an image leaves an artistic product that builds towards a crisis rather than conclusion.

Background

I am an active artist in Portland, Oregon with a MFA in Printmaking. Currently my work can by found on this website, but future shows will be posted as they approach. I have been a member of several Print Co-ops in the Portland area, and am currently building a home studio.

I also have experience as an art educator from teaching the undergraduate Lithography class at the University of Oregon, and assisting in other classes as a Studio Tech.
